The Dog and the Shadow

Трапилося так, що собака мав шматок м'яса і ніс його в роті додому, щоб спокійно з'їсти.
It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace.

На шляху додому він мав перейти дощечку через струмочок.
Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook.

Коли він переходив, собака поглянув униз і побачив власну тінь, які відбивалася у воді.
As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath.

Він подумав, що то інший собака зі шматком м'яса і вирішив, що теж хоче його мати.
Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also.

Він раптово сказав щось тій собаці розлюченим голосом, але як тільки він відкрив рота, шматок м'яса випав, шубовснув у воду, і ніхто його ніколи більше не бачив.
So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.

Хапаючись за тінь, остерігайся, щоб не втратити те, що маєш.
Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.
