The Genitive case

Grammar
The Genitive case is used:
1. to express possession or belonging: кава Марії – Maria’s coffee (the coffee of Maria). The second noun in such expressions denotes the owner and takes the form of the genitive.
2. with verbs in the negative form: Я не хочу кави - I don’t want any coffee.
3. after the word “немає”, which is the negative form of “є”: Кави немає. There is no coffee.
4. after quantity words: багато (much), мало (little), трохи (a little): багато кави (much coffee), мало кави (little coffee), трохи кави (a little coffee), один літр молока (a liter of milk), чашка кави (a cup of coffee)
5. with some prepositions requiring its use, amongst which are:

| до - to | Я йду до Тараса. (I am going to Taras/Taras’s place.) |
| від - from | Я йду від Тараса. (I am coming from Taras’s place.) |
| з - out of/from | Я йду з кав’ярні. (I am coming from/out of a café.) |
| біля - at/near/beside | Я біля Тараса. (I am beside Taras. (or) I am near Taras’s place.) |
| без - without | Я без Тараса. (I am without Taras.) |
Here is a table with the Genitive case endings for nouns/pronouns:

Grammar notes:
1.Masculine nouns, denoting: 1. space 2. matter 3. countries 4. abstract ideas, have the Genitive case ending -у/-ю : університет (University) – університету, сік (juice) – соку, чай – чаю, Китай (China) – Китаю.
Compare: Я не знаю його, її, їх. (I don’t know him, her, them)
Я йду до нього, до неї, до них - (I am going to him, her, them)
