10. The possessive pronoun "свій"

The possessive pronoun свій, своя, своє, свої denotes possession/ belonging and is related to the subject in the sentence. It has no direct equivalent in English. It has no person distinctions, thus, it can refer to any person.

Я показую свій будинок, а не твій. (I show my house, not yours.)
Ти показуєш свій будинок, а не мій. (You show your house, not mine.)
Ми показуємо свій будинок, а не ваш. (We show our house, not yours.)
Ви показуєте свій будинок, а не наш. (You show your house, not ours.)

Свій agrees with its noun in gender, case and number : свій стіл, своя тарілка, своє місто, свої діти. It is synonymous to all other possessive pronouns with the exception of those referring to the third person singular: його, її - (his, her,) and plural їхній - (their).

Я часто думаю про своє життя. (I often think about my life)
Ти дивишся на свій сад. (You loo at your garden)
Ми показуємо свою машину.(We show our car)
Ви розповідаєте про свої подорожі.(You tell about your trips)

However, this similarity in meaning ends with third person possessive pronouns can be translated in 2 different ways:
He shows his house
Він показує свій будинок.(his own house)
Він показує його будинок. (someone's else house)

She shows her house
Вона показує свій будинок (her own house)
Вона показує її будинок (someone`s else house)

They show their houses
Вони показують свої будинки. (theirs own houses)
Вони показують їхні будинки. ( someone's else houses)

Unlike its synonyms мій, твій, його, її each of which clearly refers to a person and needs no context, свій can be understood only in a sentence, and has no independent meaning other than the general one's own.

Task: Translate the sentences into English.

1. - Do you help their daughter? - No, we help our own daughter now.
2. - Does she talk about your task? - No, she talks about her own task.
3. - Whose books he took? - He took his own books.
4. - Whose car is he selling? - His own.
5. - Do you wear her jacket? - No, I wear my own jacket.


1. - Ви допомагаєте їхній дочці? - Ні, зараз ми допомагаємо своїй дочці.
2. -Вона говорить про твоє завдання? - Ні, вона говорить про своє завдання.
3. Чий книги він взяв? - Він взяв свої книги.
4. - Чию машину він продає? - Свою.
5. - Ти носиш її жакет? - Ні, ношу свій/мій жакет.

Task: Translate the sentences into Ukrainian.

1. Whose house did you paint? We painted their and ours houses.
2. Do you have your own perfume?
3. Pavlo calls his own friend.
4. Roman speaks with her friend (with Natalia's friend).
5. This man drives his own car every morning.
6. Tom bought sweets his kids.
7. The boy has his own cap.
8. The girl has her own key.

10. They have their own bags.


1. Чий будинок ви пофарбували? Ми пофарбували їх та свій будинки.
2. Ти маєш свій парфум?
3. Павло телефонує свому другові.
4. Ромаг говорить з її другом (з другом Наталі).
5. Цей чоловік водить свою машину кожного ранку.
6. Том купив солодощі своїм дітям.
7. Хлопець має свою шапку.
8. Дівчина має свій телефон.
9. Ми маємо свою машину.
10. Вони мають їхні сумки.

Task: Put the personal pronoun “свій,своя, своє, свої” into the case indicated in brackets:

1. Чому ти міряєш мою сукню? Я не міряю твоєї сукні, я міряю (своя, Acc.).
2. У неї немає (своя, Gen.) машини.
3. На чиїй машині він їде? Він їде на (своя, Loc.) машині.
4. У чию машину він сідає? Він сідає у (своя, Acc.) машину.
5. Чиїми грошима вона платить за сукню? (свої, Instr.).
6. Вона дуже любить (свій, Acc.) хлопця.
7. Вона йде зі (свій, Instr.) хлопцем до театру.
8. Де він? У (свій, Gen.) друга.
9. Де вона? Вона в (своя, Gen.) подруги.
